Crime
Barnett was waiting for his
grandparents when they returned home around 1:00 p.m. He confronted
his grandmother and pushed her down in the hallway. He then pushed
his grandfather to the floor and grabbed a knife that was lying on
the nearby kitchen table. As his grandfather rose from the floor,
Barnett kicked him in the head, and when he fell to the floor again,
Barnett stabbed him repeatedly in the neck area. All told, Barnett
inflicted ten stab wounds and numerous cuts to his grandfather’s
neck, face, and hands. Satisfied that he had killed his grandfather,
Barnett returned to the kitchen to get another knife and then began
stabbing his grandmother in her neck as well. Once again, Barnett
returned to the kitchen to get more knives. This time he retrieved
two knives with which he continued to stab his grandmother until she,
too, was killed. She suffered a total of 12 stab wounds to her neck
and numerous cuts to her face.
After the attack, Barnett concealed one of the knives by placing it between two mattress pads in his grandparent’s bedroom. Next, he went to the bathroom and washed the blood off his hands. He then removed the keys to the 1995 Dodge Intrepid that were dangling from the lock in the back door, retrieved his coat, and took approximately 120 dollars from his grandmother’s purse. Before leaving the house, Barnett stood silently next to his victims to hear if they were still breathing. After determining that his victims were dead, Barnett lowered two of the shades in the house, locked up, and drove off in the victims’ car.
Early the next morning, police officers found the victims’ car parked in a residential area of Glendale. Barnett walked up to the uniformed officers and confessed that he had committed the murders.

We did death row ministry for a decade. You should consider dropping him a post card, card or letter letting him know you were praying for him. No one is defined by one act, not even Jesus was. YES they did horrific things, but it's not WHO they are.

DeleteI would like write David. I lived somewhat the same life as he. The emotion to his eyes, showed that David is still very traumatized by his past. In a blink of a second, all went bad for him. I feel so bad for David and his trauma, and the pain he will always suffer. I am sure when he blacked out and came to, he felt so much remorse. RIP to his grandparents who loved him, when no one else would or could.

DeleteI too have been touched by David's story. I have watched his episode on I AM A KILLER on NETFLIX 3 times and each and every time I tear up. Although a brutal crime, I cant stop thinking he was a victim just as much as them. I would like to reach out to David, just to let him know i am on his side. David did not get the love he deserved and although his crime is heinous, I believe he should be eligible for parole. If anyone on death row deserves a second chance, he does. I’ve signed the petition and am praying that he gets flooded with letters of support.
ReplyDeleteI felt deeply for David listening to his story. I wish I could have helped him when he was a little boy. I would have taken him in with my crazy family and we'd have loved him to pieces. I too was an abused and neglected child and ran away and went on my own at 14. I am now a mom of 5 and a grandmom to 17. I wish I could go out and help every child who is being abused and neglected right now. We need to save these children somehow. If I could I'd take in every child that needed love.
DeleteI was told David's story by my son last night who watched it on Netflix. My heart is filled with so much sorrow for David. I have worked with children for 33 years as well as raising my own 4. What had been done to you is in my beliefs one of the worst things a person can do. Hurting an innocent child. I have been blessed by OUR ALMIGHTY FATHER with wisdom and insight. I believe that anyone who does not pay attention to a child or another HUMAN being that is telling them HORRIBLE SINFUL things are happening to them are not what they proclaim to be. I feel in my heart that the denial that there son was doing these awful things was proof that they have known how evil their son was and that he was doing evil things. After all if I'm correct he lived next door. I actually havent watched the doc. yet. This sickens me as well. I believe that the grandparentvdeath was a punishment for the evil son for all he has done to children. David just happened to be the one that ended their lives. I pray for David and Love him. ReplyDeleteI watched this this morning and wanted to send David a card and say there is a big hug there for him. I feel really really sorry for him. The system let him down from a small child, so in reality to a certain extent they DFS are also responsible. I feel really sad that the family who had him for 6 months couldn't just take him too with them and organise it, or put the job off, I guess it's a hard decision. I don't believe he deserves to be locked away for ever, even tho his poor grandparents didn't deserve to loose their lives either, that is tragic. David had the one and only opportunity to lift up his act, when he had a son. Why on earth he didn't study to do something and be a responsible parent is beyond my understanding because his partner is beautiful, and his little boy needed a father like he missed out on. I pray for David and pray for his soul and that he see's the light and if he is released he needs to keep away from drugs and clean up his act. i'm sad he didn't do that initially because he looks like he is and was a really nice human being and was crying out for help. I'm terribly sad to know David's whole life. I can't imagine (think that only the same abused victims as he can know what does it really feels), how he was suffering through all his life, how he just needed the simple and such natural thing as love. And I wasn't surprised with the result of all these circumstances. I think this person is strong and lucky enough to get the chance to be released one day. It's obvious he has suffered all way long from his birth. This world wasn't fair and didn't do none of kindness to him. We can help him by just trying to feel all his child's pain and fears with our compassion. I wish he was free one day. Be strong, man!

I believe the child family organization should of done better in placing him in a permanent home and a loving family. Sorry for the loss of the grandparents, but David was pushed to his breaking point and it should never had got to that position in the first place. The system failed him. I support David.
David should tell his story to the world, hold his head high and try to understand what purpose he is here on earth to do. It's happened and the past cannot be changed, but the future can.
Interesting that i don't read any comments about the elderly victims, who didn't deserve to be savagely murdered. Justice is about the victims. Yes, he was a victim too and the sentence of LWOP is appropriate. But save some sympathy for two people, in the final years of their lives, who had no chance for self defense. Killed by their own grandson.

We do not agree for David to be released for a very, very long time and or if ever to be released as David did kill two people.
David's crimes due to incredibly horrible abuse will hopefully become easier for David to manage with help.
We do have Compassion for David.

DeleteBeing a survivor of child abuse myself, I know what damages can cause those trauma. It destroys you. You have a choice after to build yourself in the easy way of sin (drug or alcohol to be numb or any addiction, choosing to put us at risk with prostitution or other risky behaviors or reproducing the violence ourselves because it triggers our brain in the same spot where the trauma is so our body is shooting a cocktail ketamine-like to dissociate and makes us feel "better", but this is all danger side. And sadly, a lot of victims fall on this side because of the distress and the need of this trigger to feel better, but does it really mean it is good? I am not saying here that we take a conscious pleasure in the moment. Often, it's a shame, a reason to be more depressed but we don't know how to stop doing it because our brain is addict to his own ketamine that he produces. So, is explaining what's happening in the chemichal of a traumatized brain helpful in this case? Yes and no. Because sadly, I have been severely abused, but does it mean I am not responsable for any of my actions? Ed Welch, a very good christian counselor is seperating the physical problem of the sin itself. I can be dissociated, but my consciousness will never allow me to kill. Maybe an expert will say I am wrong, but I think you need to want it to do it.

I wish David had access to email. I would write him right now. I too grew up with abuse and got stuck in "the system" those emotional scars last forever. I am not going to say he was right for doing what he did, but I do know how it feels to be willing to do almost anything to get out of a situation. I hope David someday finds inner peace and can forgive himself.
ReplyDeleteAs a mental health professional, David’s raw emotion evidences a sincerity that makes him different from others who commit murder. He was deeply touched by the kindness of others, and grateful. Had he not been repeatedly failed by those who were obligated to help, he would not be where he is today. He dissociated during this murder, which was the final straw. These were the people whom he believed actually cared and whom he loved. Don’t you think if you had been failed so many times in the face of such desperation, that you might also fall off the edge? The fact that he still loves and forgives his abuser is further evidence of his good heart and capacity for gratitude, which is rare in these situations. He deserves to be released.

DeleteI was abused as a child, put through the system. I have never killed anyone in my life. I have 2 kids I love and adore and have taken my bad experiences as a lesson not to repeat the cycle. Unless its self defense or saving someone. But cold blooded murder is just that! People say people like this should get counciling, and rejoin society. I hope to God that won't be the case. If someone is that far gone that they can killed a family member, then have time to think about grabbing another weapon and stab his defenseless grandma that many times is a cold blooded killer and should never be among society ever again! No one knows as no one else was there. In my opinion somewhere in David’s mind, when he was stabbing the grandparents, he was stabbing his abuser.

1st Amendment to the US Constitution says we can express ourselves within limits. I have a right to say this man should never be released into society. Regardless of his upbringing he butchered two elderly people. We each must be responsible for our actions. The consequences of his crimes is life without parole. That is his life and should be.
