Request for clemency
I’m writing this very difficult letter to respectfully ask you to consider my close friend Billy Joe Wardlow’s petition for clemency. Our friendship goes back over many years and more than 500 letters have been exchanged between my home in Sweden and his Texas prison cell over the past decade.
I work for a large European construction company and my friendship with Billy started after a business trip to the US where I came across a newspaper article on the Texas prison system. I chose to write to Billy all those years ago for several reasons. First of all, we are the same age and have similar interests. While I had a lucky draw in the birth lottery with a loving family in Sweden, Billy on the other hand had a terrible upbringing with an abusive mother and absent father. While the 18 years old me spent most of 1993 at University studying engineering, Billy turned to crime. This led him and his then girlfriend to the home of 82-year-old Carl Cole one fateful night that year. While Billy had no intention of killing Mr. Cole a struggle over a gun lead to his death. Fast forward 27 years and a date has been set for my friend’s execution for the 29 April 2020.
Billy has matured and learnt a great deal over the past nearly 30 years. He is the most well-read person I have ever come across. As an example, he knows everything there is to know about the internet despite having never had the opportunity to go online. He has been my English teacher, my counsellor through some difficult times in my life, my brother from another mother who I have shared things with that I haven’t shared with my best friend and so many other things over the years. He is an incredible artist who has drawn many of the art works around my home.
The thought of coming face to face with this incredibly special person in my life scared me for many years but in 2019 I finally made my way across the globe to meet my friend. Many years from now, when I am old and grey, this meeting will stand out as one of the highlights of my life.
Billy the teenager, that committed that horrible crime nearly 30 years ago, is a very different person from my friend Billy that I know and admire. He has been a model prisoner over the years and will continue to treat everyone around him with nothing but respect. There is nothing to be gained from refusing his petition for clemency. He is desperate to live and myself and many others would be absolutely heartbroken should his execution go ahead. He has touched not only my life but also that of my family and friends over here in Sweden who have enjoyed his letters over the years and my stories about my friend Billy.
As a final point I would like to say that never during our many years of correspondence has Billy ever been anything but 100% honest about his crime. He has always expressed how deeply sorry he is for how Mr. Cole’s life ended and the impact that has had on Mr. Cole’s friends and family. But to end Billy’s life in the year 2020 for this crime would be a gross misconduct of justice. Please let him continue to life out his life in prison as he poses no threat to anyone. In fact, I strongly believe that he could be an incredible asset to the Texan prison system as a general prisoner.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I appreciate you have a difficult decision to make.
Yours sincerely,
Carl-Fredrik Johansson
Hello Carl-Fredrik Johansson, I also made friends with a prisoner over seas, he has been a wonderful asset to my life and I got the opportunity to meet him last year. I support your friend Billy and I hope he is not killed by the Texas government, it would be a terrible decision. We wish you the best with love and support.
