Conan Wayne Hale is an
inmate on death row in the state of Oregon. They were convicted on
05/29/98 in Lane Countyat the age of 23 years old . His birth date is 12/28/75Crime
According to Oregon Live, Hale was
convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Kristal Bendele, 15; her
boyfriend, Brandon Williams, 15; and a friend, Patrick Finley, 13, in
1995. Two passers-by found the victims. Bendele and Williams were
unclothed, their bodies piled beside a gravel road. Nearby, the body
of Finley was dressed in his shorts and T-shirt, Bendele's pants and
a rabbit fur coat. Police charged Hale and his friend, Jonathan Wayne
Susbauer, with the killings. Hale and Susbauer blamed each other.
Susbauer was sentenced to life in prison. Hale gained international
attention when jail officials taped a conversation he had with a
Roman Catholic priest. Catholic officials sued, and the U.S. 9th
Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Lane County officials had
violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the Civil Rights
Act.

In 1993-1994 I was housed in an in-patient juvenil rehabilitation program with conan wayne hale, at that time he went by wayne. I was roomed with hale, I was 13 at the time. I was also close friends with a young woman that hale raped just weeks before the may 1995 murders.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I didn't see hale as a threat during the year & a half we knew each other, myself & other patients in the program would often mock his outbursts which were frequent. Towards the end of his time in the program he became very self-righteous in his sobriety, a characteristic that was brought to his attention in most of our group meetings. His behavior became very inconsistent, one moment he would joke around & use fowel language in conversation like the rest of us, then he would suddenly tell us to grow up & that he was finding our language offensive as he was a born again christian. I recall a specific instance when a few of us young men were making some inappropriate comments to ourselves regarding a female college intern that worked with the program, I can't recall the specific comments, but I know they were comments that I would've never made in person to her. Hale over heard these comments & insisted that we not only apologize, but tell her exactly what we said, or he would. I said that I would apologize but I refused to repeat those comments to her. At the time I thought he was in the right, it wasn't until some time later that I realized he didn't care about making us responsible, or making her aware of what was said behind her back, he wanted to see me say these inappropriate things to her face & he wanted to see her reaction, but most of all I know he enjoyed seeing us in an awkward & scary position, I know this because months later he admitted to me that he loved watching us "squirm" which was his revenge for the mocking we did. Like I said, his behavior was very inconsistent, so sometimes he would even confide in me, telling about abuse he had sustained over the years from his mother, sexual abuse from her boyfriends, his mothers suicide attempts that he said were often made with him in the same room. I found out later that almost all of these stories were not true. I had met his mother on multiple occasions where I realized she had no scars that would indicate the multiple wrist slashings he claimed had taken place & if there was one thing that wayne couldn't handle it was being caught in a lie, from experience I knew that his reaction to this was often violent, usually aimed at a nearby wall or any other object within reach that he could break. I felt that it wasn't worth it to confront him about the lies & to be honest I was too afraid to confront him anyway. The last time I saw hale was in April 1995, we were on the bus together following an aftercare meeting, we (patients of the program) were required to do 10 months of aftercare following our graduation from the program, wayne & I had both ran from the program on separate occasions so the rules upon our release were quite strict, meaning I still had to be in contact with him on a weekly basis. In April of 95 on our last bus ride together he confided in me one last time explaining that his 15 year old girlfriend was breaking up

I think the year was 1992 me and two of my girl friends were out in Eugene drinking and hanging out around the city. We came across Conan at the 711 on Blair where he was talking shit to us and just being a punk. I guess he thought that he could pick on three young girls and get away with it. No, actually we kicked the crap out of him and chased him through the alley. The cops showed up and arrested him. He messed with wrong girls that night. Conan is a punk and a coward and has always been. Also, what the hell was he doing being 23 and dating a 15 year old. I was never one to put up with being picked on or assaulted. I always fight back. The gun is the only thing that would make this guy scary. He is week and insignificant.

ReplyDeleteI don't care who heard what he said, he killed three teenagers. I met the 13 year old boy's mother yesterday. It was NOT okay to set the murderer free!! Her son did NOTHING to warrant being killed other than being a witness.
ReplyDeleteConan was protective of women, always kind hearted on the inside. He did have some rough years growing up but in the end, He mostly just looked tough. I don't even think Kristal was ever his "girlfriend". I knew her as well. I was one of the last people to see all three kids that night on the bus as they got off to go find a party. I chose not to go with them. I also saw Mr. Hale wearing the black trench coat while riding the city bus I believe on the 20th, (possibly the 19th)I gave him my black fedora hat as a birthday gift. This was all Susbauer, drugs & someone that can be talked into things.

DeleteI no both and sorry girl Conan always been off weird crazy person scenes we were kids tried raping girls obsessed with torching animal,and John he's the follower that's why he came to me after scared of Conan and turned his self in that morning I mean Conan is a dark person that's why he had a black trench on he's a freak always have been John's a scared boy who does whatever he's told it's real sad 3 kids lost there life because of both these men period there is no excuse an eye for and eye he should of been executed long time again not sure the hold up he took 3 kids from there parents were suppose to out live are kids this was brutal he tortured them kids he needs to pay asap
ReplyDeleteI have known Conan for many years as a kid. I even dated him. Conan was a very troubled child. He came from a broken home. His dad would always beat the crap out of him and his brother and his sister. I knew that Conan was not in his right mind for many years. Always drinking always doing drugs. Conan was into DND, ( he took all of that out of text) Bring it to life. he always hanging out with the younger crowd.( So he could control them) I am deeply sorry for those that were lost because of Conan. for this he deserves to die the way he took those 3 innocent lives. I am very ashamed to admit that I've known this man.
