Crime

Rountree and his girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth Stroder, kidnapped a 19-year-old woman, Diana Contreras from a Bakersfield shopping mall, robbed her, drove her to a remote location and shot her to death.

Oil company workers discovered Diana‘s body lying face up the next morning in a rural spot about two to two and half miles from the town of Taft. The body was in a field, about one quarter of a mile to 500 yards from Airport Road, a road often used by oil field workers. A busier road was about 1.6 miles Stroder was a codefendant at trial and was also found guilty of these crimes. She did not receive the death penalty, and thus is not involved in this appeal.

Mary Elizabeth Stroder

May Elizabeth had her sentence commuted from life without to the possibility of parole to 25 years to life in 2017.

David Barnett Missouri

David Barnett is an inmate on death row in the state of Missouri.. Previously sentenced to death, but the sentence was overturned by a judge in 2015 Crime Barnett was waiting for his grandparents when they returned home around 1:00 p.m. He confronted his grandmother and pushed her down in the hallway. He then pushed his grandfather to the floor and grabbed a knife that was lying on the nearby kitchen table. As his grandfather rose from the floor, Barnett kicked him in the head, and when he fell to the floor again, Barnett stabbed him repeatedly in the neck area. All told, Barnett inflicted ten stab wounds and numerous cuts to his grandfather’s neck, face, and hands.
