Crime

Zambrano, a member of the Berkeley Waterfront Commission, bludgeoned a university professor and his wife because he believed they had made anonymous calls exposing his extramarital affair. He then fatally shot another waterfront commissioner to prevent him from testifying about the attack on the couple.

He was convicted of the attempted murders of Robert and Barbara Mishel and the first degree murder of Luis Reyna

The prosecution's evidence indicated that defendant, a member of the Berkeley Waterfront Commission, bludgeoned the Mishells, a University of California professor and his wife, because he believed they had made anonymous telephone calls exposing his extramarital affair. The evidence further indicated that defendant then fatally shot Reyna, a fellow waterfront commissioner, to prevent Reyna from testifying against him in the Mishell matter.

Defendant admitted attacking the Mishells, but claimed provocation. He asserted that Reyna's death was an accident. Defendant admitted that, to cover up the homicide, he decapitated, dismembered, and scattered Reyna's body, then fled to Mexico with his girlfriend.

David Barnett Missouri

Previously sentenced to death, but the sentence was overturned by a judge in 2015 Crime Barnett was waiting for his grandparents when they returned home around 1:00 p.m. He confronted his grandmother and pushed her down in the hallway. He then pushed his grandfather to the floor and grabbed a knife that was lying on the nearby kitchen table. As his grandfather rose from the floor, Barnett kicked him in the head, and when he fell to the floor again, Barnett stabbed him repeatedly in the neck area.
